Inspired by this.

I know it’s a crappy doodle and they look nothing like the actors, but i had fun doing it nonetheless.

And it gave me a chance to continue Hobbit-bonding with my kiddos (it was for a project we did on jokes).

anyone have any ideas for a hobbit-themed party playlist?

(Or any other party suggestions…but it starts in about 3 hours, so.)

I’ve got selections from the soundtracks (including LOTR), and I’ve even got a couple of the Misty Mountain Remixes.  And “They’re Taking the Hobbits to Isengard” as a bonus.  Am I missing any other songs like “Isengard”—but clean, b/c this party is for KIDS?

So, today at homework, one of my kiddos practiced writing by copying the first lines of The Hobbit (her choice).

This prompted Belle to draw her own representation (bottom).

It also served as a good segue way to get them all back into the book.  Our reading has dropped off lately.  So I gave them a choice.  Stay inside and do arts & crafts, or go outside and listen to a chapter of The Hobbit.

They unanimously chose The Hobbit. :)

The really funny part is, we were sitting out on the playground on blankets, and all these other families were around.  I was reading aloud the way I always do, with accents and voices and dramatic gestures.  And we’re at the Battle of the Five Armies.

After a particularly loud depiction of Thorin joining the battle, Belle pointed out that I could be heard by others on the playground.  “So?” I said.  “It’s a good story.”

“But they were all looking at you…Aren’t you embarrassed?” she asked.

The funny thing is, I really wasn’t.  And afterward, a kid who had been rollerblading around was like, “Are you guys reading The Hobbit?” and we had a “Yeah, that’s cool,” moment.

I will finish this book with these kids if it kills me.

So, this morning, one of my kiddos walked in wearing a sad face.

Belle came in with her copy of The Hobbit in her arms, walked up to me, and murmured sadly, “Thorin died.”

We talked for a bit about fictional characters dying, and how it’s okay to be sad about it. But the thing that really got me was when she said, “After all that hard work he went through….”

Hobbit Character Questions...
Decided to do my own Ask challenge...I based it on characters from The Hobbit.
Here goes.
Bilbo: What was the last unexpected adventure you had, and did you enjoy it?
Thorin: Have you ever been motivated by revenge, or had someone take revenge on you?
Gandalf: What kind of advice to people usually ask you for?
Fili: Do people ever confuse you with anyone else?
Kili: What was the last thing you were "too young" (or "too old") to do?
Dwalin: Tell about a tattoo you have, or one you would get (if you're squeamish, pretend it's henna).
Balin: Has anyone ever saved your life, or have you ever saved someone else's?
Bifur: Tell a story about a scar or other injury (the funnier the better).
Bofur: What was the last random act of kindness you witnessed/engaged in?
Bombur: Name one thing you're really good at cooking/baking, or would like to be.
Dori: Tell a funny customer service story.
Nori: Are you the center of attention in your circles, or do you rarely speak?
Ori: When was the last time you felt completely unprepared for something?
Oin: Have you ever had a dream about the future that came true?
Gloin: Have you ever held a grudge on someone else's behalf--ie, you weren't the one who was wronged, but a family member, friend, etc?
Gollum: What is one of your most precious material possessions?
Thranduil: Tell us about your most fabulous feature.
Elrond: Would you rather invite people to your place, or go to someone else's house to hang out?
Radagast: If you could have any ability, what would you choose and why?
Galadriel: Is there anyone in your life with whom you can communicate almost without words?
Smaug: If you could trade places with any villain for a day, who would it be, and what would you do?

That Thorin video reminded me of something one of my kiddos said tonight.

She said she had a dream about The Hobbit last night, and she was trying to explain it, though I suspect she began to embellish it and turned it more into a story…but anyway, the funny part was, she said all the dwarves & Bilbo came to our school

and

I

asked Thorin for his autograph.

This girl is six years old and can tell I have a crush on Thorin.

Whut.
